Focus and Scope

Bumantara: Literature Journal is a peer-reviewed, open-access academic journal dedicated to the critical study of literature from various cultural, historical, and theoretical perspectives. The journal provides a forum for academics and researchers to publish original research articles and critical reviews that expand the boundaries of literary studies and teaching.

The journal accepts manuscripts covering the following focus areas and scope:

  1. Digital Literature, Popular Culture, and Digital Humanities
    • Digital Popular Literature: Studies of Alternate Universes (AU), fan fiction, digital reader communities (social media phenomena), and electronic literature (E-Literature).
    • Artificial Intelligence (AI): Literary criticism of generative fiction and poetry created by AI (GenAI).
  2. Ecocriticism, Medical Literature, and Trauma Literature
    • Advanced Ecocriticism: Studies of Climate Fiction (Cli-Fi), Anthropocene literature, and representations of environmental disasters and ecological trauma in modern and local literary texts (indigenous storytelling).
    • Medical Humanities: Analysis of literary narratives related to illness, mental health, isolation, disability, and healing.
  3. Technological Innovations in Literature Education
    • Integrating AI into the Classroom: Utilizing GenAI as a partner for analytical discussions, a tool for text deconstruction, and a catalyst for creative writing.
    • Gamification & Media: Using narrative-based games and interactive applications to enhance literary appreciation and reading comprehension.
  4. Critical Literary Pedagogy and Multimodal Learning
    • Critical Literary Instruction: Learning methods based on higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) and text deconstruction to expose biases, ideologies, and power imbalances.
    • Multimodal Literacy & Inclusivity: Literature instruction based on mixed media (audio, visual, comics, podcasts) as well as inclusive text instruction that addresses issues of disability, marginalized groups, and contemporary curriculum adaptation.
